Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to be a good swimmer to play water polo?
No. We have swimmers of all levels on the
team. That said, swimming ability and being
in swimming shape is essential. The SF
Tsunami Swim Club can help you train, increase your
endurance, and improve your stroke.
- What should I bring to practice?
- Goggles
- Swim cap (if you have long hair)
- Speedo (a one peice suit for women)
- A good attitude!
- Do you have to be experienced to play with SF Tsunami Water Polo?
We welcome players of all levels. You can
never have played before or be an ex-Olympic
star. As long as you have a strong desire to
learn and contribute a positive, enthusiastic
attitude, hop on board!
Periodically, we offer a clinic
to help newer players learn the fundamentals
of the game. Please check our Events page
for information on the next clinic.
- Is the SF Tsunami Water Polo team all gay?
The team is primarily gay and lesbian,
but we do have straight players. We
don't care how you identify as long as you're
ready to play and have fun.
- How do I join the team?

Email us to let us know who you are,
your current skill level and that you are
interested in joining the team.
- Show up to one of our regular Tuesday
practices. Your first practice is free.
Come by, meet the team and test the waters.
- Register with USA
Water Polo. All SF Tsunami
Water Polo team members must be registered
with USA
Water Polo for insurance and liability
purposes - NO EXCEPTIONS. (Note: If you just want to come check it out, and have never played polo before, USA Water Polo offers a one-time, one-week free trial membership. Please print out the form, fill it out, and bring it with you to your first practice.)
- Pay your SF Tsunami Water Polo team dues.
The easiest way to pay dues is through PayPal.
You can also provide a check to our treasurer
at practice.

- How much are team dues?
Team dues are $30 monthly. If dues are
paid annually or semi-annually, dues are
$300 or $162 respectively. In addition to
paying your team dues and for liability reasons,
all team members must also be registered
with USA
Water Polo.
- What
are the benefits of being a SF Tsunami Water
Polo team member?
In addition to regular exposure to a group
of exceptional people and athletes and getting
into great shape, team members have the opportunity
to play and scrimmage against local teams
on a regular basis and compete in national
and international tournaments such as the
Gay Games and IGLA tournaments.
